Scripture to pray over your family.
I truly believe that scripture memory is a spiritual discipline that Christians over time have neglected, or at least I have. I knew a few verses from growing up in the church, but I never studied and meditated on verses and chapters and even books of the Bible. I never memorized to understand better, I never memorized to know God better. I memorized to check a box or prove that I actually do read the Bible.
Here is a little helpful hint that I have found extremely helpful in memorizing scripture. I pray verse over my family members. I add their name to the verse. I pray for specific situations they are going through with scripture. This brings scripture to life for me.
I have provided 10 verses that I have loved to pray over my family recently. I give you the first verse and an example of praying it over someone.
1) Romans 12:1-2 “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect”.
Your prayer may sound something like this: “Father God, I appeal to you on behalf of (Family Member Name). I pray by your mercy that you help them present their bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to you. I pray that they worship you with their bodies. I pray that (NAME) is not conformed to the way of this world, specifically in the area of (INSERT AREA THEY ARE STRUGGLING). I pray that they are instead transformed by the renewing of their minds, that by this testing they may discern what is your will for their life, that they may know what is good and acceptable and pure. Amen”
Now you give it a try. I encourage you to print this list and write on it who you want to pray each verse over!
2) Numbers 6:24-26 “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace”
3) Ephesians 5:15-16 “Be very careful how you live your life, not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”
4) 1 Kings 3:12 “I will do what you have asked, I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be”
5) 1 Chronicles 28:8-9 “Be careful to follow the commands of the Lord your God, and serve him with wholehearted devotion, and a willing mind”
6) Nehemiah 1:11 “Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this year servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man”
7) Colossians 4:2 “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful”
8) 2 Corinthians 9:8 “God is able to make all grace abound to you so that in all things, at all times, having all you need, you will abound in every good work”
9) Romans 12:11-12 “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer”
10) Matthew 6:33 “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”.
What a wonderful way to cover your family and friends in prayer while also meditating on the word yourself!
