The Lie of "Bouncing Back": Why We Were Never Meant to Stay the Same

We’ve all heard the phrase "get your body back."
As moms, there is this unspoken pressure to return to our pre-baby selves like we’re trying to find a way back to a familiar house we once lived in. We look in the mirror and search for the girl who had fewer tired lines, more spontaneous Friday nights, and a different set of priorities. We think, “Once the baby sleeps through the night… once I get back to the gym… once I’m 'me' again, everything will feel right.”
But here is the quiet truth we eventually realize: That version of us doesn't exist anymore.
The Beautiful Death of the "Old You"
When we have a baby, we don’t just deliver a child; we deliver a new version of ourselves. We are physically, emotionally, and chemically rewired. To try to "go back" to who we were before is to try to ignore the life that was grown inside us. We are different. We are changed.
And as I’ve sat with this feeling lately, I realized that we do the exact same thing in our walk with Christ.
The Spiritual "Bounce Back"
When we first accept Jesus, there is this rush of new life. But after the initial "honeymoon phase" of faith, many of us start trying to reconcile our new spirit with our old life. We want the peace of Jesus, but we still want to fit into our pre-Jesus activities. We want the grace of God, but we try to hang onto the pre-Jesus friendships or habits that don't actually serve this new life.
We feel a tension—a spiritual "identity crisis." We wonder why we don’t feel comfortable in the same rooms we used to love, or why we can’t seem to "get back" to the person we were before.
The truth? You aren't supposed to.
It’s Okay to be Different
In motherhood, the change is the point. The stretch marks, the shifted priorities, and the new capacity for love are proof that life happened. In Christ, the change is also the point.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Becoming a believer isn't about adding Jesus to your existing life; it’s about allowing Him to give you a new one. Just as you can’t un-be a mother, you can’t un-be a child of God.
Embracing the Transformation
If you’re feeling the "itch" to go back—to a body, a social life, or a mindset that feels "easier" or more familiar—take a breath and remember these three things:
Change isn't Loss; it’s Growth: You aren't "less" than you were before; you are more. You have a greater capacity for sacrifice, a deeper well of wisdom, and a more profound purpose.
Grace for the Transition: It’s okay to recognize the "old you." I challenge you to take a minute to thank God for saving you, for changing you, now ask Him to give you strength in the sanctification process.
The Goal is Likeness: We aren't striving to get back to who we were; we are striving to move toward who He is.
Mama, you aren't a "less than" version of your old self. You are a sanctified, strengthened, and beautifully transformed woman. Whether it’s the way your jeans fit or the way your heart feels, don’t fear the change.
The new life is where the miracle is.
Here are some verses to meditate on as you embrace your new life!
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" 2 Corinthians 5:17
"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh." Ezekiel 36:26
"You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self... and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness." Ephesians 4:22–24
"For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10
"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?" Isaiah 43:18–19
"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." Psalm 139:14
