It sounds silly, but I heard this one time in a corporate talk. The speaker started by asking a question, “How do you eat an elephant?” the answer was astonishingly simple, “one bite at a time.”
An elephant is no small creature, and eating it sounds intimidating and downright horrifying if I’m being honest. But, if it must be done, how would one do it? One bite at a time. Mark Twain penned one of my favorite quotes; “If you have to eat a frog, do it first thing in the morning” meaning, if you have a hard task that needs to be done, just do it. Don’t linger on it and procrastinate, just do it and move on. But what if you have a BIG elephant sized task? Then you start now and do it one bite at a time. (No elephants or frogs were harmed in the writing of this blog).
Here is an example or two. Let’s say you want to read the bible in a year, that’s no small task to commit to. So, you sign up for a plan (might I suggest the Tara Leigh Cobble Bible In A Year reading plan on the bible app) and you do a little every day. You don't read genesis to revelation in a single setting.
If you want to tone up your muscles or lose a little weight, you don’t go to the gym one day for 12 hours and "poof", weight gone and abs present. No! You work a little every day.
If you want to be a godly woman who loves the Lord and her family, who is adored by her husband and praised by her children, who leads younger women and is a pilar in the church, then you have to get there one step at a time. You have to take small steps to make big changes.
You have to, like Jesus might I add, wake up “very early in the morning, while it is still dark” and pray. (Mark 1:35
You have to consistently pray and be thankful (1 Thessalonians 5:16-17, Luke 21:36, Ephesians 6:18).
You have to have faith, sometimes in things we do not understand or cannot even see, (Hebrews 11:1, Mark 11:24, Hebrews 11:6, Luke 1:37, 2 Corinthians 5:7).
One step at a time we have to trust God to lead the way, “As you go step by step I will open up the way before you” (Proverbs 4:12).
So momma, as this new year begins remember, you can start anything, anytime, anywhere, you just have to start. That being siad, I have attached a books of the bible reading tracker for you to print and use if you like!
There is also a date tracker that my husband and I are using! Set a goal and love your husband well.
Finally, a regular tracker for you to track whatever you want, fitness, steps per day, bible study, prayer goals etc. These trackers should be a reminder to you that everything takes time, even instant coffee isn't instant, and we will all wait on coffee.
Start, and watch God work.
Happy New Year!!
