Every Piece Has A Purpose

Lego’s. Great for developing fine motor skills. Great for teaching kiddos to follow directions. Great for teaching patience. Not so great for the vacuum cleaner or bare feet but hey, you win some you step on some.

Recently my son and I were putting together a Lego kit he got for his birthday. We both have a touch of OCD in our DNA so we genuinely enjoy making sure every little piece goes into place correctly. We get to a step in the directions that calls for a small, odd shaped, clear piece and we cannot find this piece anywhere. So, we look ahead in the directions and it doesn’t look like this particular piece is all that necessary. So, we continue on without the small, odd shaped, clear piece. When we get to the end of the activity, we admire our work, but then my son notices something.

“Mom, this piece is weird, it’s not working right.”

I look it over, “yeah buddy it looks like it needs something here to make it rotate better” I say.

“It’s the little piece we couldn’t find!” It was as if an actual lightbulb appeared over his head with this realization. He was relieved to discover what that piece was for but also completely disheartened at the idea that we left a piece out and now the kit doesn’t live up to its potential. It's doesn't function like it was created to function. Sure, it works ok, but it’s not what it was intended to be.

Much like every tiny Lego piece has a role to play, in the body of Christ, all believers have a place. That can be easy to forget when you feel like the small, odd shaped, clear piece of the package. Often times, as a 30 something year old mom, I can feel insignificant, out of shape, and invisible.

But scripture tells me I have a place and a purpose. In fact, we all do.

“For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ and individually members one of another” (Romans 12:4-5).

“There is one body and one spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling” (Ephesians 4:4).

“Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.” (Romans 12:6-8).

Christ is the head of the body (Colossians 1:18). And while you may not be the full arm or leg or even hand of the body of Christ, you are a piece of it. You are important and your function matters. Can the body of Christ operate without you? Absolutely, but does it function to its fullest potential? Not a chance.

So, momma, when you feel like you have no purpose, remember that little Lego piece. Remember that who you are and what you do matters. Remember, you may be small but God uses small things in big ways. "But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;" (1 Corinthians 1:27).

You may be "out of shape" or feel like you aren't good enough for God to use, remember, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:13).

When you feel invisible, and unappreciated, remember, "From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind." (Psalm 33:13). God see's you momma.

Bible Verse:

“Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it” (1 Corinthians 12:27).

Something to think about:

Prayer: Father God, thank you for giving us all a role to play in furthering your kingdom and spreading the gospel story for your glory. Help me to remember that I am important to you, and you see me in my efforts to please you!
