Combating Negative Emotions

No matter what “season” you are in as a momma, they are all busy or challenging in their own ways. From the sleepless newborn nights to the noise making “no” saying two-year-old stage, to the slow-moving middle schooler, there will always be times when you experience negative emotions and frustrations. I’m here to tell you the devil will use whatever he can to get under your skin. Here is the promise of our merciful God through the Holy Spirit though. We have the power to fight those negative emotions with positive thoughts and actions. Here are a few ideas for verses you can read, and actions you can take, to combat those negative emotions, especially during this busy time of year.

Anger --> Singing

Scripture:

“Be not quick in your spirit to become angry,for anger lodges in the heart of fools” Ecclesiastes 7:9

“Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name;      make known his deeds among the peoples!Sing to him, sing praises to him;      tell of all his wondrous works!” Psalm 105:1-2

Science: Research has found that singing releases dopamine and causes the brain to “feel good”.

Burned out --> Go on a walk

Scripture:

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” Isiah 40:29

“May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy” Colossians 1:11

Science: Walking improves muscle endurance, lowers blood pressure, and increases energy levels.

Overwhelmed --> Write it out

Scripture:

“When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then You knew my path.” Psalm 142:3

Science: Writing things down boosts connectivity between different areas of the brain. It also helps us to see the bigger picture and helps reduce stress.

Anxious --> Deep breaths

Scripture:

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:34

Science: Research suggests that controlled breathing can trigger the "rest and digest" response by stimulating the vagus nerve, which controls many involuntary functions, including heart rate.

Stressed --> Movement

Scripture:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27

Science: According to Harvard Health, “Exercise reduces levels of the body's stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. It also stimulates the production of endorphins, chemicals in the brain that are the body's natural painkillers and mood elevators.”

Sad --> Gratitude

Scripture:

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

“Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever!” 1 Chronicles 16:34

Science:

Gratitude causes neurotransmitter production, this causes our brain to release chemicals that lead to feelings of contentment and boosting overall mental health.

Lazy --> Cold Shower

Scripture:

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,” Colossians 3:23

“Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.” Proverbs 10:4

Science:

Cold exposure sends electrical impulses to the brain that causes pain relieving effects as well as increases metabolism and improves circulation. It releases endorphins that give you energy without the negative side effects of caffeine.

Impatient --> Reflection on progress

Scripture:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

“Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” Romans 12:12

Science: When you strengthen your reflection muscle in your brain, you actually boost productivity. Studies suggest that the more you reflect on how far you have come, or how much God has done for you, the more content you become.
